i have been a leader now for about 3 1/2 months, thats IT??? i guess it is, but i have learned a TON of stuff. here is a brief list for anyone who is thinking of becoming a leader to remember:
1. don't forget your camera. (i have NEVER remembered to take it to any event or meeting even when reminded by others (forgot it again tonight). i have zero pictures of an actual bonafide event....for all you know i might not even BE a campfire leader, i have NO proof.
2. take handiwipes everywhere, paper towels don't work on hands making pinch pots (luckily i found some babywipes in the back of my van last minute, whew!)
3. wear makeup to any event that may be televised (or any event where large crowds will be watching you...my christmas parade fiasco).
4. have your campfire kids run around outside for five minutes before you plan on talking to them about any kind of serious subject matter, or ANY talking really.
5. don't forget snacks, oh and make sure the drinks don't stain the carpet at your local meeting place (or need some fancy bottle opener to open) oops!
6. practice every craft prior to the meeting, you won't believe how many things go wrong when you just pack everything up for a craft without trying it out...you may forget scissors or tape or a hot glue gun (bought last minute literally moments before our christmas party for our snow globes).
7. make sure you have an example to show the kids of any craft or you will get some pretty interesting (but oh so creative) results.
8. don't worry if you say, "um, let me check my notes" midway through a nice little lecture breaking your concentration so bad you never recover or if your own kid is yapping during your presention, adding tidbits and highlights, sometimes personal info you weren't planning on sharing openly....just let it all go!
9. have fun! don't be hard on yourself or be too serious....especially when one of your camp fire kids thinks the official "camp fire van" parked at the council headquarters is YOUR personal car (telling her mom, "oh look! ms. leslie is here! as she points to the van with campfire painted on the side). pretty cute!
