ahhhhhhh the beach!

growing up near the beach (wish it was ON the beach) meant lots of time spent swimming, sunning, surfing and all that kind of stuff. for many years now, i just haven't gone much. we are all super pale, with the thought of adding age spots, wrinkles etc to my lovely complexion (ha ha)....it just seems like too much effort to slather on a ton of sunscreen, wear hats, set up umbrellas, find a nice spot among the crowds of people and still fret that somehow someone will get a nasty burn (not to mention the fear as a parent that YOU might be responsible for skin cancer your child gets in the future from too much exposure on YOUR watch! just seems there's too much guilt for a parent to survive it all)...

so avoid the beach, i have. until recently, when i noticed the beach is a wonderful place to go during the fall, winter, and spring months....all those lovely seasons when the hoards of people escaping the heat are nowhere to be seen. you can wear your long pants and light jacket, minimal amount of sunscreen required. watch the waves, make sandcastles and collect shells...all the fun stuff of summer without all the hassles. at least for me, it is nice to have a reason to smell the salt air, feel the sand between your toes, watch the surfers catch a wave and my kids run along the water line.
