we are knee deep in our conservation/recycling/environment patch (wise old willie) and this is something i saw done on a dumpster diver website (there are lots of groups of artists who make art from found objects). after cleaning out all the toy boxes and junk drawers i saw the potential.
this is my example for the girls to see, i used "lizzy" and it came out pretty good i think!
sanding wood
putting on a little shine
glue on the bits and pieces
put a picture hanger on back and you are done!
