christmas decorating continues, a little demolition

we are slow slow slow on getting all our decorations up, at least it still feels fun to bring stuff out. here is our version of stockings hung over the fireplace, we made this last year or maybe two years ago actually.

i get some odd afternoon light around here, lizzies hand prints are blown completely out of the picture. oh well, back outside, hoping the avocado tree is ready. i picked a couple and if they ripen up then its time to distribute these beauties.

unfortunately our brick "stepping stone path" is on its way out, new cement comes in tomorrow. when we first moved in to this house, there was nothing here but gravel and the fence ran from the edge of the garage to the house perpendicular to the fence we now have. the front windows had various trees and stumps and rubble in front of them. when we redesigned the front fence to give us this nice front area to landscape, for some reason this section just never worked out. every idea flopped and eventually we had mud and weeds to plod through. the brick stepping stones were great but started sinking and the moss never took off between them. one thing i have learned is how much of my original plantings around here are super high maintenance and i am all about low low low maintenance these days (even zero sounds good). i am ready to cement in much of the weedy muddy mess and plant bamboo in rows to encircle the whole house. i am sure someday i will regret that decision (when bamboo starts shooting through my living room) but for now, i like it! stay tuned for more on this project. hoping to get as much done this weekend as possible, next weekend is lizzies top chef birthday party!

after the new cement goes in we will add a new gate and lighting for our entrance. for sure a new mailbox and house numbers, maybe some kind of fountain as you walk in, along the wall straight ahead. my "japanese" garden really went to hell, not much japanese left in it so this spring i hope to get that all straightened out as well. can't wait!
